Editor: Daniel A. Hoffman, MCC

This newsletter contains current news and information on the "Cruise" industry. It will also contain the "Views" of the editor on different issues within the industry. The editor owns and operates a cruise oriented travel agency located in South Central Pennsylvania. This newsletter will serve several purposes, including but not limited to, keeping you up to date on current events in the industry, offering views and opinions of the newsletter staff as well as views submitted by readers, providing information about cruise offerings and specials as well as cruise related products.

***IMPORTANT***

Starting several issues ago, instead of sending the full HTML formatted newsletter to you via email, you have received a simple text email from Cruise-n-Views advising you that your weekly newsletter is ready and providing you a direct url link to the newsletter.

This is being done for several reasons. It allows us to provide more photos and graphics as well as continuing the full HTML formatting without exceeding some email program's allowable size limits. Also, with ISP's and general user's increasing attempts to limit and avoid SPAM, which we wholeheartedly agree with and support, we do not want to run the risk of your requested weekly newsletter being blocked by automated SPAM prevention software and screening techniques.

It has been determined that this is the best method to assure delivery notification of your newsletter to the largest number of subscribers on a consistent basis.

Always remember, the newsletter is produced and delivered between late Monday evening and early Tuesday afternoon. If for any reason, you do not get your notification that it is ready, you can ALWAYS go to our web site directly and access the newsletter.

#1 Sint Maarten - Saint Martin
(Dutch & French side)

Hello from your contributing & traveling writer, "Capt. Lou"…off my boat "Texas Truck"… and "Deep in the Heart of the 24th Heineken Regatta" in Sint Maarten, Netherland Antilles, The Leeward Islands. Having seen over 250 racing yachts including some of the World’s Finest Yachts which have made their way here to this beautiful Island to compete in the sun for the fun, and of course, the recognition that comes with winning-- "the world’s most serious fun race." (More on the regatta next week)

Lots of you international cruise ship passengers were here also…And I do mean LOTS!

On one day, there were 8 ships docked or anchored in Great Bay, Philipsburg, NA. On other days only four or five might appear on the horizon as I drove each morning from the French side where I lived to the Dutch side where I WORKED. Each morning as I approached the mountain top overlooking the harbor, I’d slow down while Mamma--would throw my daily paper through my car window as I handed her the 50 cents--and then proceeded over the top to view the new days cruise ship arrivals. What a beautiful sight for a visitor to this superb island to see. And that was just one of the many magnificent views I got each day on my way to instruct at the Maritime School of the West Indies along side Simpson Bay Lagoon-Dutch side.

Your editor, my brother, Dan has always said that I must have some Karma with the World’s Largest Cruise Ship--Queen Mary 2. Well he may be right…because on the day when 8 ships were in, she was there-- as if to bring more spectators to the races. I was extremely excited since our paths had previously crossed in Southampton, England and in Ft Lauderdale, Florida… and now I was here for her inaugural visit to this beautiful Isle in Paradise.

Yours truly didn’t arrive on a cruise ship. However, I heartily recommend it as a mode of transportation to experience this fascinating destination. I was in Saint Martin to instruct several courses for mariners at MSWI--The Maritime School of the West Indies--www.MSWI.org. Wherever, we went--by land or by sea--the passengers were having the time of their lives. Most cruisers don’t get to experience food ashore because of the great meals aboard--but they really should visit one of the islands over 300 great eateries--French or Dutch. (I tried as many as I could-- with a few bars thrown in for good experience.)

So why two names? Sint Maarten, Saint Martin ?

As the sign says, "One Island, Many Cultures, One People"… but two countries on one island.

Sint Maarten is Dutch and encompasses 16 square miles, while Saint Martin is French and encompasses 21 square miles. There are no border controls. Since 1648, the only indications of control are merely signs that say French Side or Dutch Side. Two Governments, France & Netherlands control their respective sides.

Totally unconfirmed and unproven: a tall tale states that a Frenchman with a bottle of Wine and a Dutchman with a bottle of Gin, each started out from Oyster Pond (where Capt Lou lived for 30 days) each walking around the island in opposite directions would meet and that would be the Line between the two countries. Well, obviously the Gin had a little greater affect on the results-- because the Frenchman covered more territory!

From the islands highest point, Paradise Peak--1392 feet--on a clear day one can see 9 of Sint Maarten’s Caribbean neighboring Islands and many of her own 37 stunning beaches.

More on Sint Maarten and we’ll meet some of those neighbors next week. Hope you join Capt. Lou for the trip.

2005 World Cruise

Cunard Line has just released information for the 2005 World Cruise which will depart on January 3, 2005 from New York on a 108 day westward cruise around the globe. It will arrive back in New York on April 22nd. The cruise is called, "Voyage of Discovery".

Obviously not everyone can spend 108 days aboard a ship, and most can not afford to, so the cruise can also be booked in segments ranging from 6 to 106 days. An "Around The World Cruise" is indeed a lifetime dream of many people and it is even a yearly celebration for several hundred QE2 aficionados.

The 2005 route balances days at sea with the 39 ports of call including 6 ports of call with overnight stays. After leaving New York the ship starts down the coast and transits the Panama Canal and has port calls in Mexico, California, Hawaii, French Polynesia en route to New Zealand and Australia.

The QE2 will sail up Australia’s west coast with visits in Fermantle and Perth before reentering the tropics to visit Bali. The Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore complete the Asian elements of the cruise.

The ship then calls at Colombo, Mumbai, Dubia, Oman and Jordan before transiting the Suez Canal. After spending time in Turkey, Italy and Spain, the last leg of the journey is the traditional transatlantic crossing from her homeport of Southampton to New York City.

The ship is well equipped for such a journey and offers six dining venues, several bars and lounges, a European style spa complete with dry sauna, steam chamber and thalassotherapy pool. The ship also has a computer learning center with Internet cafe, one of the largest libraries afloat, a spectacular ballroom, gymnasium, aerobics studio, beauty salon, cinema, showroom, casino, medical center, hot tubs, indoor and outdoor pools, video arcade, golf driving range and putting green, formal wear shop, and several duty free boutiques, including a Harrods.

Needless to say, there is plenty to do aboard the ship, let alone the 39 ports of call encounter during this memorable world cruise. Interested in taking this cruise? Pricing for the full 108 day cruise runs from a low of $18,599 per person for an M5 inside cabin up to $239,879 per person for the Grand Suite!! And yes, all the cabins do indeed sell! By the way, these are the early booking rates, they do climb as the sailing gets closer if sales are doing good, which they usually do!
